Sniper Guide

Sniping in Wardogs is the Recon track: start with the SKS at Recon 5, move to the SV98 at Recon 18 and the AMR 50 at Recon 35, add the ghillie suit at Recon 26, and shoot from high ground such as Bakurani's hilltop church. Season 2 cut big-caliber damage but raised sniper hit-location damage.

To snipe in Wardogs you level the Recon track: Dexerto's advice is to spot with binoculars, skip the Scout Rifle and switch to the SKS at Recon level 5, and the bolt-action SV98 follows at Recon 18, the ghillie suit at Recon 26 and the .50 caliber AMR 50 at Recon 35, per Bulkhead's Season 2 notes and Dexerto's Recon track. Every rifle, scope and suit is bought again each life, so a sniper also has to earn: spotting and assists pay, though Season 2 (Oct 15, 2026) cut spotting rewards by about 30%. This guide gathers what Bulkhead's notes and guide outlets say about rifles, optics, camouflage, positions such as Bakurani's church, earning and counters, with Season 2 prices and unlocks. The rifles themselves are on Sniper and Marksman Rifles and the track on Recon.

The rifles, in unlock order

All of these sit on the Recon track. Prices are the vendor's price each life; the unlock is a one-time cash cost at that Recon level (Progression and Unlocks).

Sources: Bulkhead's Season 2 notes (prices and unlocks), Dexerto's Wardogs database pages for the Scout Rifle TD, SKS, Mosin Nagant, SVD, SV98, BMR-308, M14, MK22 and AMR 50 (types, calibers, ranges), and Dexerto's tier list of Sep 16, 2026, which predates Season 2.

Season 2 reshuffled the track: the BMR-308 moved down from Recon 30 to 20, the SV98 from 19 to 18, and the MK22 up from 25 to 30, while the AMR 50 rose from $8,800 to $14,800 a life, per Bulkhead's notes. The M14 is new in Season 2. The silent Compound Bow ($1,350, Recon 16 for $150,000) is also a Recon weapon, but its 60 m effective range makes it a close-range tool, not a sniper rifle.

Which to buy: Dexerto says to avoid the Scout Rifle and move to the SKS as soon as Recon 5 opens it. Game Rant (Sep 12, 2026, Season 1) found the SV98 can one-shot unarmored players and those in low-level armor with a head or torso shot, but has very high vertical recoil, and each of its magazines takes two backpack spaces. KeenGamer (Sep 15) rated the SVD only C because the SKS "covers the same role far more cheaply." More rankings are on Best Weapons.

Damage and ballistics in Season 2

Season 2 cut base damage for the big calibers on every weapon that fires them: .308 Winchester by 25%, 7.62x54mmR by 20%, 7.62x39mm by 19% and .50 caliber by 16%. For sniper rifles, Bulkhead raised hit-location damage to offset the cuts "to keep that sniper fantasy," so bolt-action rifles still reward precise shots. Marksman rifles got the opposite: a new recoil pass and weaker headshots and upper-body hits, so they "sit between assault rifles and snipers." The Scout Rifle now one-shots a target with no helmet in the head, while a Level 1 helmet takes two headshots.

Damage falls off past each rifle's effective range: Dexerto's database gives most rifles full damage out to that range and 20% at 1,200 m, and it does not publish head and body multipliers. A Range Finder gives an exact distance readout, which helps judge drop (Medical and Recon Equipment). PC Gamer notes that holding Shift while aiming steadies the sights with less sway and a slight zoom. In the clip jackfrags zeroes a sniper rifle to a 300 m target with Page Up and hits it dead center.

Scopes

Marksman and sniper optics fit only marksman and sniper rifles. Two rifles have their own: since Season 2 the Mosin Nagant takes only its PU 91/30 scope, which Bulkhead says is because other sights "were not intended to be compatible" until planned customization arrives, per the Season 2 notes, and the M14 uses the Leatherwood ART II.

Scope Magnification Price Unlock

Loadouts guides recommend

Game Rant's Recon guide (Mehrdad Khayyat, Sep 12, 2026, Season 1) gives two builds. Its low-level build is an SKS with the DTK-1 Brake, SKS Bipod and 6x Precision Rifle Scope, a GGX 17 pistol, and a Small Hammer to fortify the nest. Its mid-level build is an SV98 with the SRVV Brake, SV98 Bipod and 6-10x Scope MRAD. At Season 2 prices the SKS build's rifle costs $4,700 and the SV98 build's $8,980, worked out from Bulkhead's notes and Dexerto's attachment prices. Some parts moved in Season 2: the GGX 17 now unlocks at Wardog level 18 (it was level 1), and Dexerto lists the 6-10x Scope MRAD at Recon 28. For a broke start, Game Rant's budget guide (Sep 15, 2026) suggests a Mosin Nagant with a 6x scope and a Scout Backpack, a Season 1 build, since the Mosin now takes only its PU 91/30 scope. Full kits by role are on Best Loadouts. The clip is SaucySurg's Season 1 Mosin kit, with the 6x scope it can no longer take.

The ghillie suit

The ghillie suit is two items worn together: the Ghillie Body Suit ($3,000) and the Ghillie Headwear ($2,500), both unlocked at Recon 26 for $80,000 and $60,000. Per Dexerto, it hides you from Infrared Range Finders and removes the death cam for the players you kill. Season 2 moved both pieces from Recon 24 to 26 and the "(Dead)" variant from 27 to 41, per Bulkhead's notes. The Steam store page itself pitches the role: "purchase a ghillie suit and snipe from a distance." Details are on Ghillie Suit.

Where to set up

High ground and landmarks. Bakurani has a church on top of a hill whose side doors give good views; Game Rant calls it a good sniping spot and suggests building a Recon Tent on the hilltop outside. Churches are among the few structures that cannot be destroyed and often stand on high ground, per GameSpot. Bulkhead's launch changelog closed an exploit that let players reach the church roof, so do not count on getting up there. The zone's capturable towers are also sniper vantage points, per PCGamesN (Hot Zone and Towers).

Watch the approaches. Factions usually enter the Control Zone from the west, south and east, Game Rant notes, so a position that covers one team's route sees steady traffic. The map facts are on Maps.

Build a hide. The Recon Tent costs 7 build supplies, has 300 health, hides the players inside it and needs no FOB; the Small Hammer ($100) builds it. With an FOB, a two-story Recon Tower costs 200 supplies, and GameSpot's FOB build order puts sniper towers in its second phase, after the walls. See Building and Fortifications.

Do not just camp. PC Gamer singles out players camping towers with scoped rifles instead of pushing the objective, and only bodies in the zone score points (Control Zone and Scoring). A sniper who sets up inside the zone still counts toward the team's score.

Earning as a sniper

Spotting is the Recon player's steady income. Holding the fire button on an enemy with binoculars marks them for your whole team and pays XP and cash, and an assist when a teammate kills the target is "worth hundreds," PC Gamer wrote in Season 1. Bulkhead called spotting "the lowest-risk, highest-paying way to earn" and in Season 2 cut its rewards about 30%, scaled them to the value of what you spot, and dropped the pay for a spotted target killed by another enemy team from 50% to 25%. Spotting gear also costs more since Season 2: Binoculars $180 (was $75), Monocular $350 (Recon 2), Range Finder $1,450 (Recon 8) and Infrared Range Finder $3,200 (Recon 32), whose battery lasts about 80 seconds of use, per the same notes. Spotting vehicles, crates and buildables counts too, and the AMR 50 is the rifle built to hit materiel. More ways to earn are on Money Making Guide.

Counters, and how to survive them

The Infrared Range Finder is the sniper's main threat and tool alike: Bulkhead pulled IR Rangefinders from the vendor on Oct 2, 2026 because "they cross the line into being too overpowered," and brought them back in Season 2 on batteries. A full ghillie suit hides you from them. Season 2's rain reduces spotting range for everyone. Helmets matter against snipers: in Season 1 a bolt-action rifle could still one-shot a Level 2 helmet, Game Rant's budget guide found, and the Season 2 Level 4 Helmet covers face and neck with 60% damage reduction, though it muffles sound and narrows your view (Armor and Gear). If you are downed, a teammate can revive you and you keep your rifle; give up and you rebuy it (Healing and Revives). In the clip, from Bulkhead's Oct 24, 2026 podcast, the team asks whether the batteries went far enough.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sniper rifle in Wardogs? Dexerto's Sep 16, 2026 tier list ranks the SVD and BMR-308 marksman rifles S and the SV98 and AMR 50 bolt-action rifles A in Wardogs, but it predates Season 2's caliber cuts. Game Rant recommends the SV98 at mid level for its one-shot potential.

How do you unlock sniper rifles in Wardogs? Sniper rifles unlock on the Wardogs Recon track: the SKS at Recon 5, the Mosin Nagant at 10, the SV98 at 18 and the AMR 50 at 35 in Season 2, per Bulkhead and Dexerto. You earn Recon XP by using Recon gear, mainly spotting with binoculars.

How much is the ghillie suit in Wardogs? The Wardogs ghillie suit is $3,000 for the body suit and $2,500 for the headwear each life in Season 2, unlocked at Recon 26 for $80,000 and $60,000. You need both pieces.

Where is the best sniper spot in Wardogs? Game Rant recommends the church on Bakurani's hilltop, with a Recon Tent outside it. Capturable towers inside the Control Zone are also sniper vantage points in Wardogs.

Can snipers one-shot in Wardogs? Yes: Game Rant found the SV98 one-shots unarmored or lightly armored players with a head or torso shot in Wardogs, and since Season 2 the Scout Rifle one-shots a head without a helmet. Heavier helmets need more hits.

Did Season 2 nerf snipers in Wardogs? Season 2 cut base damage for the big calibers in Wardogs, but Bulkhead raised sniper rifles' hit-location damage to compensate. Marksman rifles were weakened against heads and upper bodies.

How do snipers make money in Wardogs? Wardogs snipers earn mostly by spotting with binoculars or range finders and collecting assists when teammates kill the targets, plus their own kills. Season 2 cut spotting rewards by about 30%.
