Reception and Reviews
Wardogs is rated Mostly Positive on Steam (74% of 80,852 English reviews) but Mixed over the last 30 days (55% of 45,402) as of Oct 26, 2026, after Season 2 and a 175 ms ping cap brought its worst review days. Critics like it: Eurogamer called it "a brilliantly refreshing take on the genre", and it has no Metascore yet.
Wardogs is well liked but divisive: on Oct 26, 2026 its Steam page shows Mostly Positive, 74% of 80,852 English reviews, with the last 30 days Mixed at 55% of 45,402, because the weeks after Season 2 (Oct 15) and the Oct 21 ping cap were its worst. Press praise is strong: Eurogamer called it "a brilliantly refreshing take on the genre", PCGamesN "a brilliant exercise in greed as teamwork", and Destructoid "by far the best shooter money can buy at the moment". The complaints that keep coming back are launch queues, the grind and endgame balance, team balance and power vehicles. Metacritic shows no Metascore yet, with three critic reviews of the Early Access version. It also sold 3 million copies in just over two weeks and is nominated for Best Early Access Game at the Golden Joystick Awards. The clip is Bulkhead at its Oct 9 press conference asking players for honest reviews, good or bad.

Launch night: queues and review bombing
On launch evening, Sep 10, the Steam rating sat at Mixed, 57% positive, as players waited 40 minutes to several hours in the login queue; TheGamer called it review bombing over queue times, and GamingBolt (Sep 11) named the queues as the main reason reviews were Mixed. At one point 45,590 players were in the game and 168,000 waiting (PCGamesN, Sep 12, 2026). Once the servers settled, the rating rose to Mostly Positive at 70%, and by Sep 12 PCGamesN saw recent reviews at 83% positive from about 24,000. Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer told IGN "I gotta take the L on this one guys" (GosuGamers, Sep 11, 2026). The fixes are on Crashes and Errors.
Season 2 and the ping cap backlash
Season 2 day itself, Oct 15, drew 1,838 positive and 1,102 negative reviews (62.5%); the next day fell to 42.8%. The season opened with a cash and XP bonus for the blue team that Bulkhead dropped after a day (Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer's "We f***ed up", as PCGamesN printed it, Oct 16), a Driver exploit that let players unlock tanks on day one, and progression fast enough that, in Bulkhead's words, some players reached top armor and tanks "within days, so the wipe never really landed" (PCGamesN, Oct 17, 2026). Bulkhead's answer was to bring Season 3 forward.
On Oct 21 Bulkhead lowered the maximum ping on official servers to 175, to protect players "from an influx of regions that are more prone to cheating" (GameRiv, Oct 22, 2026). GameWatcher reported complaints from players in Asia and from friends in different countries, some asking for refunds. The next day, Oct 22, is the worst in the histogram: 547 positive to 2,053 negative, 21.0%, and Oct 23 was 24.8%. See Servers and Matchmaking and Anti-Cheat and Bans. The clip is Bulkhead's Oct 24 podcast on what Mixed recent reviews mean for the studio.
Critic reviews
Metacritic lists three critic reviews of the Early Access version and no Metascore: Eurogamer (Sep 29), Jeuxvideo.com (Sep 28, an Early Access score of 75) and GamingBolt (Sep 25) (Metacritic, read Oct 26, 2026). Most outlets have written impressions rather than scored reviews, as is common for Early Access.
| Outlet | Piece and date | Verdict as printed |
|---|---|---|
| Eurogamer (Rick Lane) | Early access review, "a shooter for the gig economy", Sep 29 | "a brilliantly refreshing take on the genre" |
| Jeuxvideo.com | Early Access review, Sep 28 | 75 |
| GamingBolt | Review, Sep 25 | Listed on Metacritic |
| Destructoid (Andrej Barovic) | Early Access impressions, Sep 16 | "by far the best shooter money can buy at the moment" |
| PC Gamer (Morgan Park) | Preview, Aug 11 | "a very confident first impression" |
| PCGamesN | Impressions, Aug 11 | "a brilliant exercise in greed as teamwork" |

What critics praised
Eurogamer describes the one mode as "essentially King of The Hill on a massive scale" and dwells on the cash economy: idling in the zone pays a drip of cash, assists pay, and downed players get into "bribe wars" for revives (Eurogamer, Sep 29, 2026). PCGamesN's title says the same thing differently, praising how cash turns greed into teamwork (PCGamesN). PC Gamer wrote that it is "the only FPS where I actually expect to get revived" (Sep 17), praised the medic bribe as "one of my favorite shooter mechanics in ages" (Sep 11), and said Wardogs has "a real server browser" that Battlefield 6 lacked (Sep 15). Kotaku called it a "Massive 100-Player Warzone Simulator Fueled By Cash That Has Me Hooked". How the economy works is on Economy and Cash.
What critics criticized
PC Gamer's preview warned that progression "gets expensive fast" and that the class-free roles make teams less organized (PC Gamer, Aug 11, 2026). Destructoid listed mortar spam, artillery, Stingray drones, FOBs built anywhere and weak starter guns as needing work (Destructoid, Sep 16, 2026). PC Gamer did the math on its Season 1 Medic grind, 177,619 XP at level 17 against 337,000 for the Medical Bag at level 24, about 13 more hours (Sep 25), and Brammer himself said "I think the endgame is a bit sh*t" (PC Gamer, Sep 29, 2026). Rock Paper Shotgun noted the "mixed messages" of a game where cash is king banning XP farms (RPS via Steam, Sep 14). Kotaku reported players switching teams mid-match "To Cheat And Troll" (Sep 15), and PC Gamer that players were actively avoiding the blue team (Sep 14; see Factions). Progression is on Progression and Unlocks.
Comparisons press made
PC Gamer placed Wardogs between "hardcore Arma stuff" and "basically Battlefield": "Wardogs finds an exact middle ground" (PC Gamer, Aug 11, 2026). PCGamesN headlined it Battlefield 6's next challenger and compared its money to "a Counter-Strike-style persistent cash count". PC Gamer noted that the first beta alone, over 100,000 concurrent players, was more than Squad, Hell Let Loose or Arma ever had (Aug 24, 2026). The mode itself comes from the Arma 3 King of the Hill mod (Development History). In the clip Bulkhead places it in the middle itself.
Awards
Wardogs is nominated for Best Early Access Game 2026 at the Golden Joystick Awards, which are voted by the public (Bulkhead, Sep 26, 2026). The winner had not been announced as of Oct 26, 2026.
Is Wardogs worth it?
For players who want large, slow, team-driven fights with a real economy, the press consensus is yes, at $39.99, with the warnings Bulkhead itself gives: it is Early Access, content is thin, seasons wipe progress, the price is planned to rise, and it runs on Windows only. Bulkhead's own line after Season 1 was "If you'd rather hop back in at a later update, or wait for 1.0, that's completely okay. You owe us nothing" (Bulkhead, Oct 9, 2026). See Price and Supporter Edition, Seasons and Wipes and Early Access and Roadmap.

Season 2Wardogs Season 2 is update 0.2.0, live since Oct 15, 2026. It wiped progression, added four weapons, four vehicles, three buildables, the Molotov, rain and the Gold Market, rebuilt Bakurani's spawns and roughly halved the XP needed for level 20. Bulkhead dropped its Lonestar bonus after one day and plans to end the season early with Season 3 on Nov 12, 2026. -
Crashes and ErrorsMost Wardogs launch errors (the WD-L0 codes such as WD-L014) are fixed for some players by repairing the Elytra anti-cheat from the game's folder; WD-L020 was a Windows 11 update clash fixed in update 0.1.2 on Sep 30, 2026; errors 1147405308 and 1413677057 point to the servers. Official help is Team17 support at support.team17.com.

Season 3Wardogs Season 3 is expected on Thursday, Nov 12, 2026, with a fresh economy reset, going by Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer's reply on Steam as PCGamesN and Shacknews reported it. As of Oct 26, 2026 no Bulkhead news post confirms the date, the start time or the patch notes.
-
Servers and MatchmakingWardogs has no matchmaking button: you pick a match from a server browser, through the Deploy screen's Official, Community, Infantry Mode and Low-Level choices. Official servers have kicked high-ping players since Season 2, with a 175 ms maximum since Oct 21, 2026, and limited servers are planned.
-
Anti-Cheat and BansWardogs uses the kernel-level anti-cheat Elytra, per its Steam store page; the betas used Easy Anti-Cheat, and the switch is why Wardogs does not run on Linux or Steam Deck. Bulkhead bans cheaters and exploiters (cash and XP reset to 0, timed or permanent bans), turned off Steam Family Sharing on Sep 18, 2026 to stop ban evasion, and capped official servers at 175 ms ping on Oct 21.
-
Economy and CashEvery Wardogs player starts with $10,000, buys a whole loadout every life, loses it on death and earns cash back through teamplay (zone time, revives, transport, logistics, spotting, kills); the balance carries from match to match until a season ends. Since Season 2 (Oct 15, 2026) logistics pay lower base rates plus delivery streaks, spotting pays about 30% less, and vehicle and armor prices went up.
