Development History
Wardogs began at Bulkhead as a Tencent-backed AAA shooter and was scaled back to Steam Early Access after Tencent sold the studio in Dec 2025. It was built over 3+ years with the creators of the Arma King of the Hill mod (Sa-Matra), on Bulkhead's War Dynamics Framework in Unreal Engine 5, and planned for 5,000 concurrent players before 428,666 arrived.
Wardogs was developed by Bulkhead for more than three years (Bulkhead says "3+ years of development" by Jun 6, 2026), first as a major AAA game under Tencent and then, after Tencent sold the studio in Dec 2025, as a smaller Steam Early Access release (The Game Business, Sep 15, 2026). Its one mode grows out of the Arma King of the Hill mod, whose creators, Sa-Matra, worked with Bulkhead on it. Announced on Feb 5, 2026 and tested in pre-alpha, alpha and two betas, it launched on Sep 10, 2026 to a team that had planned for 5,000 concurrent players and got a Steam peak of 428,666 three days later. The dated list of every step is Release History.

From a Tencent AAA game to Early Access
Bulkhead came under Tencent when Tencent-owned Splash Damage bought it in 2022, and under Tencent Wardogs was planned as a major AAA title. When Tencent sold Bulkhead in the week of Dec 11, 2025 to Super Media Group, everplay and HIRO Capital, the game was scaled back to an Early Access approach, and Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer had already warned staff that month that they faced possible redundancy (The Game Business, Sep 15, 2026; Hitmarker, Dec 11, 2025). The Game Business titled its interview "The shooter that Tencent abandoned". Brammer told it the game needed to sell at least 400,000 copies, and that 600,000 would have been "okay". The studio side of the story is on Bulkhead.
King of the Hill and Sa-Matra
The core mode, three teams fighting over one randomized zone (see Control Zone and Scoring), comes from the Arma 3 King of the Hill mod. Bulkhead's design team "spent years collaborating directly with the original ARMA mod creators" (Bulkhead, "Evolving the King of the Hill Mod!", Feb 19, 2026), and PCGamesN names those creators as Sa-Matra (Feb 5, 2026), building the game with Bulkhead and Team17. The announcement already set out the shape that shipped: 100 players in three teams, a randomized 2x2 km Control Zone, first to 100 points, on a 256 km² map (announcement release, Feb 5, 2026).
The engine: War Dynamics Framework and War Tech
Wardogs runs on Unreal Engine 5. Bulkhead calls its own layer for 100-player battles the "War Dynamics Framework" (announcement release, Feb 5, 2026; Top Questions FAQ, Feb 18, 2026). everplay's announcement of its stake in Bulkhead's owner calls the studio's Unreal Engine tooling the "War Tech Framework". The two names come from different sources; neither says whether they are the same thing. Bulkhead's May 21 debrief promised "Real-world ballistics, audio and flight models" (Bulkhead, May 21, 2026).
Georgia and the maps
For level design, Bulkhead gathered reference "firsthand in Georgia" (Bulkhead, "Level Design & Performance", Jul 16, 2026). The store sets the game "in the derelict industrial mountains of Eastern Europe", in the fictional war-torn Kolchia (Factions). The same devlog covered performance across hardware, saying playtesters were consistently surprised by how well it ran. What is known about the maps is on Maps.
The reveal and the devlogs
The announcement trailer went up on Feb 5, 2026, and within days Bulkhead counted 100,000 Steam wishlists "in just 3 days", more than 10 million social views and 10,000 Discord members (Bulkhead, Feb 9, 2026). A run of videos followed on Steam: community answers on Mar 3, the "Early Access & Beyond" plan on Apr 7 (see Early Access and Roadmap), the tactical debrief on May 21, the Gameplay Trailer at the Future Games Show on Jun 6, and "Addressing Feedback" on Jun 16, which kept the killcam: "Every player's line between arcade and realistic is different. We've drawn ours" (Bulkhead, Jun 16, 2026). Wishlists reached 500,000 on May 26 and 1 million on Aug 14, 2026.
The playtest program
Pre-alpha playtests with "a small selection of real players" ran for a few months before June 2026, when Bulkhead added more players (Bulkhead, Jun 7, 2026); sign-ups went through the "FirstLook" community page. A Closed Alpha weekend ran just before Aug 11, when Bulkhead lifted its NDA on alpha footage. Because it had been "capped on how many Steam Keys we can send externally", beta access moved to pre-orders and Steam's playtest sign-up (Bulkhead, "PRE-ORDER NOW!", Aug 11, 2026). Closed Beta 1 (Aug 21 to 23) peaked at 105,774 players per Tech Times with nearly 500,000 unique players, per co-founder Howard Philpott. Closed Beta 2, from Sep 3, was "a genuine scale test" of server scaling, the login queue and voice chat (Bulkhead, Sep 1, 2026); it opened to everyone on Sep 5 and peaked at 245,118 players at 17:38 UTC that day.
The June beta build is also where the crunch row began: Brammer told Eurogamer that after Wardogs was late for it, staff worked an extra two hours a day, Monday to Thursday, for four weeks, and that this was optional (PC Gamer, Sep 15, 2026). The first official livestream, on Jul 23, was cut off by Twitch with a one-day suspension after a developer threw a sex toy at a colleague on camera (PCGamesN, Jul 24, 2026).
"10 reasons not to buy Wardogs"
Pre-orders opened on Aug 11, 2026 with a devlog titled "10 Reasons NOT to Buy WARDOGS", covering the Early Access content, the stepped pricing, monetization, local voice chat and gamepad support (Bulkhead, Aug 11, 2026). It warned "Wardogs has a content problem... Players should not expect regular content drops", retold Battalion 1944's collapse, and set a sustainable target of "3,000 to 5,000 daily concurrent players" (PC Gamer, Aug 11, 2026). Pre-orders made Wardogs Steam's top-selling premium game that same day. An "11th Reason" followed on Sep 8, about anti-cheat (Anti-Cheat and Bans). Pricing is on Price and Supporter Edition.
Preparing for launch
Wardogs missed Gamescom Opening Night Live, so Bulkhead ran its own showcase, The FPS Games Show, on Sep 3; Brammer said it was "harder than we thought" (The Game Business). Before launch Bulkhead said it had "planned for 5k players concurrent", and Brammer explained why the second beta was not open from the start: "If we open the flood gates, very very few systems hold up to the numbers we hit in our first beta" (PC Gamer, Sep 2, 2026). Pre-load opened on Sep 9 with the Season 1 changelog. On Sep 10 the game sold more than 1 million copies, and the login queue broke: Brammer said Bulkhead was "rate-limited by Valve", and at one point 45,590 players were in and 168,000 waiting. What happened next is on Release History, Patches and Updates and Player Count.

Release HistoryWardogs was announced on Feb 5, 2026, opened pre-orders on Aug 11, ran two closed betas (the second turned into an open beta on Sep 5) and entered Steam Early Access on Thursday, Sep 10, 2026, at 16:00 UTC. Season 2 arrived on Oct 15, 2026, and Season 3 is expected on Nov 12, 2026, per Bulkhead CEO Joe Brammer.

Control Zone and ScoringWardogs has one mode, Control Zone: three teams fight over a randomized 2x2 km zone, the team with the most players inside it scores a point about every 30 seconds, and the first team to 100 points wins. Players in the smaller Hot Zone count double. -
FactionsWardogs has three factions: Lonestar (blue), a Western paramilitary company; Valkyra (red), out to restore the Soviet People's Republic; and Manticore (green), Persia's shadow army. They play the same, but blue has lost more often since the betas, and Season 2's one-day Lonestar bonus did not fix it.
-
MapsWardogs launched in Early Access with three maps, each with three variations, and every map is 256 km² with a randomized 2x2 km Control Zone. Bulkhead names only Bakurani; Game Rant names Zestafona; no new map has been added as of Oct 26, 2026. -
Early Access and RoadmapWardogs has been in Steam Early Access since Sep 10, 2026, and Bulkhead says it will stay there "around 1 to 2 years", with 1.0 tied to the PS5 and Xbox versions planned for 2028. Planned but not yet in the game: player skills, custom loadouts, limited and primitive servers, more maps, fighter jets and the Black Market & Vault; the price is planned to rise from $39.99 to $49.99 and then $59.99.
